In the spring of 1927, the Icelandic novelist Halldór Laxness had reached a crisis point in his young life. He had begun his journey as a writer in Reykjavik in 1919, making his debut at just seventeen years of age, taking the pen name “Halldór from Laxnes” from the farm where he grew up, then boarding a boat for Copenhagen where he would stroll arms linked behind him, waistcoated, like Kort over Danmark. Halldór dvaldist langdvölum erlendis, en átti fast heimili að Gljúfrasteini í Mosfellssveit frá 1945. About Under the Glacier. Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness’s Under the Glacier is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, a wryly provocative novel at once earthy and otherworldly. At its outset, the Bishop of Iceland dispatches a young emissary to investigate certain charges against the pastor at Snæfells Glacier, who, among other things, appears to have given up burying the dead.

He was prolific during his long career, writing 13 major novels, five plays and a dramatisation of one of his novels, not to mention his collections of short stories, essays and memoirs. The house was built in 1945 by Halldór and his wife Auður Sveinsdóttir. The architect was Ágúst Pálsson and the interior designer was Birta Fróðadóttir.
